A new law comes in on Monday that will affect cat owners in England – 20% of owners will have to make a change or risk a fine
A new law is due to come into force on Monday which sets out new rules for pet owners. This will see anyone who owns a cat in England having to take action or risk receiving a fine.Owners who don’t carry out this step could be charged £500.
This will put the law in line with the existing law for dogs, which came in during 2016. This law says dogs must be microchipped from eight weeks old.According to research from Money Saving Expert , 20% of owners’ cats aren’t microchipped.The government said you can ask your vet, local council or local rescue and rehoming centre if they can microchip your dog or cat. This can sometimes cost a fee.
When registering, you will be asked for your address and contact details – this must be updated later on if you have a change in circumstances, such as phone number or address.When do I need to get my cat microchipped? MSE explained that you will have 21 days to sort out any microchipping once the new law comes in on Monday.MSE added: ‘It can also affect your ability to make a claim for loss or theft on your pet insurance.
