Starting from June 10, 2024, cats must be microchipped by law
A vet has issued a reminder to cat owners that they need to comply with a new law that begins in days. From Monday, June 10, cats in England must be microchipped, with owners that don't do so facing a £500 fine.
As explained on gov.uk, cats must be chipped and registered on a database by the time they are 20 weeks old. Rules differ in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It is already law for dogs to be chipped by the time they are eight weeks old. Animals can be easily microchipped by a vet, rescue centre, local council or other trained professional and, once done, the owner's details will be registered on one of various databases approved by the government. If a cat or dog goes missing, if it is found a vet, dog warden or rescue centre can scan the chip and reunite it with its owner.
Nick Horniman MRCVS, veterinary surgeon and founder of online pet pharmacy www.mypetsvet.co.uk, said: “An important reminder to all cat owners that the deadline to have your cats legally microchipped is quickly approaching. Every cat must be microchipped by June 10, 2024, even if your cat never ventures outside, because there’s every chance they could still sneak out. Owners who fail to comply with these new laws could see themselves getting a fine of up to £500.
"Owners hesitant about microchipping their furry friend should look at it as a safety net that can provide peace of mind, so that their cat can be identified and brought back home if anything unexpected ever happens or they go missing. Beyond that, microchips prove invaluable for cat owners dealing with uninvited feline guests, as they can install specialised cat flaps that operate like a keyed entry system.
