Fort Worth police shot and killed a man Saturday after the man’s mom called authorities to report he was armed with a machete-style knife, authorities said.

The shooting happened about 5:45 p.m. in the 3500 block of Wedgworth Road South, police said. Dispatchers received a 911 call from a woman who said her adult son was “at her residence and possibly armed with a knife,” Fort Worth police said in a news release.

Officers told the suspect, who police have not immediately identified, to drop the knife. The man “presented officers with a deadly threat,” Fort Worth police said, and two officers opened fire, striking and killing the man. Fort Worth police did not describe the nature of the “deadly threat” or mention whether less-lethal options were used before gunfire. Police did not immediately respond to several questions, including how long officers attempted to negotiate with the armed man before they shot him, whether the shooting was captured on body-worn camera and if police intend to release the footage, and whether authorities had previously responded to the home.
