Forney Police say two units were totaled on U.S. 80 as officers helped block traffic after a crash. TXDOT says it is reviewing.
In at least two of the incidents, DPS said the cause was traffic slowing or stopping for construction as the highway narrows to one lane.Forney Police say two of its officers are lucky to have walked away uninjured after a driver plowed into their units early Thursday morning while they were helping block traffic after a crash along U.
S. 80 in Kaufman County. “It’s hard. It's very difficult, because the first thing that comes to your brain is, are they OK? And then you look at the cars, and then you realize how fortunate you are that they are OK, and that they happened to be standing on the side of the road helping with the accident in general and traffic direction,” said Forney Police Chief Carrie White. Officers had responded to assist with an initial crash that occurred in the eastbound lanes near the Windmill Farms exit at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday. In at least two of the incidents, DPS said the cause was traffic slowing or stopping for construction as the highway narrows to one lane. While the stretch of highway falls outside of Forney’s jurisdiction, White said she and city leaders are in communication with TXDOT about possible solutions. “Ultimately, I think it'll be beneficial if TXDOT takes a look at that particular area, particularly the lighting for our crash. Outside of that, I know that they're also looking at the construction site altogether to make sure that they're doing all that they can to make it a safe area,” she said.“TxDOT is reviewing details of the incidents on US 80 and the current work zone. The department review will help determine additional measures that may be warranted.”“I wanted people to see the dangers of our job, number one, that they face every day. Whether that's an accident or a traffic stop, it doesn't matter. They're facing those dangers every day. That's one reason. And the other reason, obviously, is slow down. You know, when you're approaching a construction site or you see red lights flashing and you have to move over for emergency lighting, right? You either slow down and you move over,” said White. According to Forney Police, the vehicle involved in the secondary crash that hit officers was a rideshare vehicle. The passenger was airlifted and the driver taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
