A former Layton High School student accuses the Davis County School District of fostering a racist environment, citing years of harassment from both peers and staff.
A former Davis County student, Ebony Davis, has filed a federal lawsuit against her school district, alleging a culture of racism that forced her to leave the basketball team she loved. Davis claims years of racial harassment from both peers and staff, including being called racial slurs, having her hair touched without permission, and facing racist remarks from her coach.
The lawsuit details instances of students requesting 'n-word passes' and the coach making comments about her hair and financial issues as 'White people problems.' Davis states the harassment caused her to intentionally fail classes to quit the team due to overwhelming anxiety. An assistant coach reported the behavior, but the lawsuit alleges school officials delayed investigating despite a federal agreement with the DOJ to combat racism. The Davis County School District acknowledges the ongoing effort to address harassment and discrimination, stating that a single instance is intolerable and contrary to their mission. The district points to a July 2024 effectiveness assessment report detailing improvements made since a 2021 federal settlement
