) - A legal battle is brewing between Spring Hill College and a former student who claims mold in her campus housing gave her long-lasting health issues. Kacy Nalley graduated from Spring Hill in 2023, earning her nursing degree and playing soccer for the college.
Court documents show she’s suing the school in Mobile County Circuit Court, claiming mold in two student housing facilities caused on-going health problems, including asthma and other respiratory issues. “My issues started junior year. Sinus infections, fluid in my face, I was coughing up black. With nursing, they were like, you can’t come to class like this, you can’t go to clinicals. So, every week I was having to get mono, COVID, flu, like every test under the sun, just to prove that I wasn’t actually contagious,” Nalley said. Nalley provided photos of her living conditions while on campus, showing black particles on the walls and inside a vent. She says she submitted work orders, but the issues continued, and her symptoms worsened. A legal battle is brewing between Spring Hill College and a former student who claims mold in her campus housing gave her long-lasting health issues.Court records show attorneys for Spring Hill deny the mold caused Nalley’s health problems. The college also says it doesn’t have enough information to confirm or deny some details about the mold and cleanup efforts. Last week, a judge ordered Spring Hill to hand over three mold-remediation contracts. Initially, Nalley’s attorney had subpoenaed records from outside companies that handle mold work on campus, but the school objected. While the case is set for a jury trial in November, Nalley says she hopes the lawsuit leads to changes, so other students don’t have to live in similar conditions. “I have nothing against the school. I loved my experience; I loved my professors. The campus: I absolutely rave about it still, but the fact that our health is jeopardized is super unsettling and disappointing,” Nalley said. Spring Hill College President Mary VanBrunt said the college does not comment on pending litigation.
