A former Rutgers basketball assistant under Steve Pikiell stepped down from a head coaching job with three weeks to go until the season starts.

Fairfield head coach Jay Young yells to his team in the first half of an NCAA college basketball game against Iona during the finals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament, Saturday, March 13, 2021, in Atlantic City, N.J. stepped down from his position as head coach at Fairfield and will be leaving the university, it announced Monday. The move comes exactly 3 weeks before the start of the 2023-24 season.

Chris Casey, who has served as an Assistant Men’s Basketball coach for Fairfield over the past four seasons, will assume the role of Interim Head Coach effective immediately. Coach Casey’s strong knowledge of the game, commitment to player development, previous head coaching experience and passion for the Fairfield University Men’s Basketball program will provide a strong foundation for him to lead the Stags for the 2023-24 season.

Young had previously been a head coach in the past at New Haven, a Division-2 program, and Newbury , a junior college program.
