Former NFL running back Peyton Hillis is reportedly hospitalized after a swimming accident where he saved his kids from drowning, according to TMZ.
According to the report, Peyton remains in the intensive care unit for treatment on his lungs and kidneys, but doctors say his health is improving, according to his uncle, Gregg Hillis. Peyton’s kids are said to be safe and healthy, according to the report., Peyton Hillis was in Pensacola, Fla. when the accident happened and he was helicoptered to the hospital and remains unconscious in the ICU.
While there were posts on social media indicating that Hillis was in critical condition, his uncle, Greg Hillis, wrote on Facebook that his nephew’s conditions were improving. “I just wanted to let everyone know on Razorback Nation that Peyton is doing better,” Greg Hillis wrote. “He’s still in intensive care and having some problems with his kidneys and his lungs but the doctors say he is improving. I just wanted to head off any rumors that may be started. I’m sure he would want everyone to know that he appreciates all of the prayers thrown up on his behalf!!!”
The 36-year-old Peyton Hillis had a seven-year NFL career that spanned from 2008-14. He played for the Broncos, Browns, Chiefs and Giants after being drafted out of Arkansas by Denver in the seventh round.His best NFL season was in 2010 with Cleveland, where he carried the ball 270 times for 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also caught 611 passed for 477 yards and two touchdowns that season. The stellar year earned him cover honors for the “Madden ’12” video game.
For his career, Hillis had 2,832 rushing yards and averaged 4.1 yards per carry. He also had 1,050 receiving yards and scored 26 total touchdowns.
