Journalist Barrie Cassidy also highlighted Crean's opposition to the Iraq war.
Before entering politics, he spent six years as the head of the Federated Storemen and Packers' Union and was president of the ACTU between 1985 and 1990. Crean was a minister in the Hawke and Keating governments after first winning the seat of Hotham in 1990.In 2013, he publicly called for a leadership challenge and retired days after Rudd took over from Gillard as prime minister.

Ms Stoker’s remarks come after Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus appointed Mr Bromberg as President of the Australian Law Reform Commission for a five-year term. “Justice Bromberg, to put it lightly, just does not have a good track record,” she said. Ms Stoker said Mr Dreyfus has given an “important signal” that federal Labor isn’t content to be a mainstream party. “If this is the kind of activist he would appoint to the Australian Law Reform Commission, just imagine what he will do to the High Court,” she said.
