) - The former administrator of the Crenshaw County Jail was indicted Monday on federal charges, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
The indictment against Christian Alexander Porter, 33, charges him with violating a pre-trial detainee’s 14th Amendment rights after assaulting the jail inmate who was said to be both handcuffed and compliant at the time. The federal grand jury also returned with a charge against Porter for allegedly falsifying a report and making false statements to state and federal investigators.
The assault incident is said to have happened in October 2021. The additional charges stem from Porter’s alleged false statements to investigators in November of that year, as well as June of 2022. The FBI Mobile Field Office is investigating the case, which is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Counts for the Middle District of Alabama and Trial Attorney Lia Rettammel of the Civil Rights Division.
If convicted, Porter could receive up to 10 years in prison for the federal civil rights violation, 20 years in prison for falsifying the report and making false statements to state investigators, and five years in prison for making false statements to federal investigators.First Alert: Tracking warmer weather for the final week of January
