MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A former Dale County tennis coach was sentenced to 25 years in prison on charges he had sex with one of his students.
Leroy Thomas Joyner, Jr., 51, was convicted of illegally transporting a minor across state lines with the intent to engage in sexual activityAccording to court records during that trial, testimony revealed Joyner had engaged in sex acts with his student in several states, including Georgia, Louisiana, and South Carolina.
Joyner was arrested in 2018 when law enforcement investigated after receiving reports of physical violence against one of his 15-year-old students. The investigation showed he would beat the victim with a wooden board to get her to obey him.Joyner’s business, Grassroots Tennis Association, provided tennis lessons to underprivileged children and teens. It shut down following his 2018 arrest.
