Columbus Zoo and Aquarium President and CEO Tom Stalf and Executive Vice President and CFO Greg Bell voluntarily resigned.
Former Columbus Zoo CEO Tom Stalf is set to be sentenced for his role in a multimillion-dollar scandal that prosecutors say involved misuse of zoo funds and resources. Court documents accuse Stalf of creating an 'animal house atmosphere' at the zoo, where he 'helped himself to thousands of dollars of the zoo’s alcohol,' purchased an RV with zoo money, and bartered zoo goods for tickets.Others charged in the investigation have identified Stalf as the ringleader of the scandal. Brad Barbin, the attorney for another defendant, suggested that Stalf's leadership role could influence his sentencing.
"Those guys were the instigators," Barbin said. "I will bet you dollars to donuts that the sentence will be far more serious for both Mr. Stalf and Mr. Fingerhut, and it should be." Three others have already been sentenced in the case. Former Chief Financial Officer Greg Bell received three years in prison. His son, Grant Bell, a purchasing agent for the zoo, was given community control, as was Tracy Murnane, who was in charge of purchasing.
