A former Columbus police officer, 35-year-old Andrew Mefford, was sentenced to 50 months in prison for his involvement in a drug trafficking ring. Mefford pleaded guilty in August to three counts of cocaine possession with the intent to distribute and one count of money laundering. He admitted to stealing cocaine from two separate locations during drug investigations, as well as from the CPD evidence room, replacing it with fake cocaine.
Mefford served with CPD for 13 years before resigning last year after his arrest on federal charges. During his sentencing, he apologized to his family, friends, CPD, and the community, expressing remorse for his actions and apologizing to anyone who may have received drugs on the street. Mefford is the fourth former Columbus police officer to be sentenced in connection with this drug trafficking ring. ABC 6 reached out to The Columbus Division of Police to inquire about policies and changes implemented to prevent similar crimes but has not received a response
