Ford on Thursday announced plans to build an all-electric commercial vehicle at the Ohio Assembly Plant, a move the company said would create 1,800 union jobs and come with a $1.5 billion investment.

AVON LAKE, Ohio —

Kumar Galhotra, president of Ford Blue, said the new vehicle to debut in “mid-decade” will be targeted at professional customers and be all-electric, but he didn’t release many other details during an early-morning conference call. Ford’s Ohio Assembly Plant covers 400 acres and sits on the border of Avon Lake, Sheffield and Sheffield Lake. The plant currently assembles larger vehicles used more by professionals, like the F-650 and F-750 trucks, F-350, F-450 and F-550 super duty chassis cabs and the E-series cutaways and stripped chassis.

The Lorain County plant has undergone mulitple changes since its opening in 1974, originally making the Econoline van and once producing the Nissan Quest and Mercury Villager minivans, Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner small sport utility vehicles.
