From being left out of federal aid options to fears they would be refused COVID-19 vaccines, the pandemic brought an extra wave of unexpected challenges to undocumented people.
the annual federal tax contribution of undocumented immigrants at an estimated $79.7 billion, and puts their annual state and local tax contribution at an estimated $41 billion. There are plenty of other more meaningful and less quantifiable ways to measure belonging and investment when it comes to undocumented people, but the point, immigrant advocates argue, is that someone’s legal status shouldn’t exclude them from receiving the aid they might need to survive a pandemic.
Texas-based college student Alejandra Z. had that exact fear. She and both of her parents are undocumented, while her younger sister is a U.S. citizen. When her mother caught COVID-19 last year, Alejandra and her sister both worried that health-care professionals might decide not to treat their mother in favor of reserving scarce medical resources for legal citizens instead.
Alejandra’s mother has since recovered, but contracting COVID last year put her out of work for more than five months. Alejandra started working about 30 hours per week on top of her full-time course load to cover her mother’s living expenses, in addition to her own. Eventually, the 21-year-old made the decision to sublet her apartment and move back in with her mother to avoid paying rent on two residences..
