Former Franklin County Deputy Jason Meade will be tried a second time in the shooting death of Casey Goodson Jr.
last week in the closely-watched case. The judge in the case actually declared a mistrial, then rescinded his ruling and ordered the jurors to return to their deliberations.An hour or two later, they came back still unable to reach a verdict, and the judge declared a mistrial a second time.
"After consulting with the primary investigators, the Special Prosecutors have concluded that it is in the best interest of all involved and the community that they move forward with a second trial on the indictment," the prosecutors said in a joint statement Thursday. They pointed to statements calling for a new trial from Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein and Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin.
"What is equally tragic is for our elected officials to desert the jobs for which they were elected and exert political pressure to retry Jason Meade," his defense team concluded. "This pressure was too great for the Special Prosecutor’s to resist."Sean Walton, attorney for the Goodson family, said following news of the retrial that he had spoken with several jurors, alleging they were in favor 9-3 of convicting Meade on two of the three counts.
