Former Franklin County Deputy Jason Meade took the witness stand in his murder trial Tuesday.Meade is accused of shooting and killing Casey Goodson Jr. in 2020.

COLUMBUS, Ohio —Meade is accused of shooting and killing Casey Goodson Jr. in 2020. At issue isn't whether he shot him, but. He began testifying at about 1:40 p.m. It took until about 2 p.m. before Meade began answering questions about the specifics of the day of the shooting.

Meade said after Goodson drove past him while he waved a gun at him, the deputy then made a U-turn to try to follow him. He told the court he also used his radio to call to a colleague nearby to let him know that trouble may be afoot. When asked why he felt it was necessary to pursue Goodson, Meade said, "I'm a law enforcement officer. It's my duty to respond. It's my job." "I don't know what his intentions are at this point. I have no idea where he came from or what he's going to do."Meade said he lost sight of Goodson but eventually caught up with him and approached him in front of his home. He testified that Goodson was trying to get into the house and had opened the front door. "My intent was to call him back towards me," Meade said. "After he had stopped, I gave him more commands again, at which point he made a turn, and he pointed the gun back toward me ... I stepped to the left, and I shot him.""Because he pointed his gun at me," Meade said. "I thought I was going to die.""One hundred percent positive," Meade said. Prosecutors had wrapped up their case earlier Tuesday. They had listed as many as 50 witnesses but called far fewer to testify before turning the case over to the defense. The defense claims Meade was working with a U.S. Marshal’s task force when he saw Goodson driving in a car waving a gun. Meade then followed Goodson to his home and ordered him to put his gun down, but that Goodson did not comply, according to his defense.taken from a Minerva Park police officer in the moments following the shooting. There is no video of the shooting itself. That video played in court Monday showed Meade on the porch of the Goodson home telling other officers he saw Goodson with a gun. Meade said he shot Goodson, claiming Goodson pointed his gun at him after Meade twice ordered him to drop the weapon. Family members said Goodson was not holding a gun, that he was holding a sandwich and his keys at the time. They also said Goodson had been wearing earbuds at the time and couldn't hear Meade.A coroner's autopsy determined Goodson was shot six times, including five in the back.
