A hobbyist created a vehicle that transforms from tank to quadcopter mode with 3D-printed parts, carbon fiber, and innovative design.
The vehicle’s six brushless motors, two servos, and two linear actuators are controlled by a custom PCB running Dreamflight software. Michael Rechtin ’s vehicle transitions from driving to flying via a four-bar linkage system. A retracting linear actuator rotates the wheels and prop guards to a vertical position for flight.
The project began with computer-aided design software called Onshape. This program allowed the designer to sketch ideas, test linkage systems, and ensure the transformation mechanism would work. Rechtin highlights that after hours of work and coffee-fueled creativity, the design evolved into a functional 3D model ready for construction.components, with over 100 parts manufactured on Bamboo Labs’ X1 Carbon and P1S printers. These printers were praised for their speed, reliability, and ability to produce high-quality prints.
