The Miami-Dade County Elections Department said a person who discovered the ballots brought them to authorities.

FILE - Ballot boxes are lined up as employees test voting equipment at the Miami-Dade County Elections Department, Oct. 19, 2022, in Miami. A Florida elections worker is out of a job after containers of completed ballots fell onto a road from the truck they were driving.

Dashcam video of the incident circulating social media this week shows a car swerve to avoid the objects which are laying in the middle of a busy road. The driver then takes the containers into their vehicle, showing labels reading “official election materials.”The Miami-Dade County Elections Department shared a statement on the incident, saying the worker responsible was fired due to the department's “zero tolerance” policy. “The incident that occurred was due to human error,” it wrote. “The worker forgot to lock the back of the truck and as they drove off, one sealed bin and one sealed bag fell out, containing already voted ballots from early voting.” Elections staff say they examined the containers and found neither had been tampered with or damaged. While unintentional, the Elections Department has a zero tolerance for error and therefore the employee was terminated,” the department added. The handling of ballots is undergoing intense scrutiny as early voting takes place across the country. The Department of Homeland Security issued a warning to law enforcement in Washington state and Oregon last week advising of “threat factors” facing ballot boxes. Boxes in Portland, Ore. and Vancouver, Wash. were set on fire this week. Phoenix, Arizona authorities last week announced the arrest of an individual accused of lighting a USPS mailbox containing election ballots on fire. However, Sgt. Rob Scherer of the city fire department’s Arson Investigation Taskforce said he had no reason to believe the attack was politically motivated. “There was never any ... information that led us to believe that this was maybe election related or anything like that,” he said. “We never got any hint or any detail that told us this might be.”Jackson Walker on X at @_jlwalker_ for the latest trending national news.
