Florence Pugh teases the 'bizarre but pure' father-daughter relationship at the center of Marvel's 'Thunderbolts' between Yelena and Alexei, played by David Harbour.

She added, "Purely because of what Jake wanted to make and the story that we were allowed to do, we were also, as characters that are hugely complex and very difficult to live alongside one another, able to go into a very bizarre but pure and human father-daughter relationship that I was so grateful to be able to do, especially with an actor like David.
For the uninitiated, Yelena and Alexei are not biologically related — they were Russian undercover agents pretending to be a family in the '90s to steal S.H.I.E.L.D. intel. After the mission was complete, Alexei and his"wife" Melina and Yelena to the Red Room to train as Black Widow assassins. In the 2021 film, Natasha reunited their fake family decades later in the present day..
Harbour joked that Yelena and Alexei's relationship "starts out terrible, and then it ends pretty terrible too. Spoiler alert!" He laughed before adding seriously, "No, we saw some of it inshowing Alexei living alone in a disaster of an apartment that he's let fall into even more disrepair.
