Hong Kong Harry wins three-horse finish in $250,000 Seabiscuit Handicap over Beyond Brilliant and Masteroffoxhounds on the turf
Jockey Flavien Prat and trainer Phil D’Amato combined to sweep the two Grade II, $250,000 stakes races at Del Mar this weekend.Prince Abama led most of the way to win Friday’s Hollywood Turf Cup.But Prat had to rally Hong Kong Harry in the stretch Saturday to nose out Beyond Brilliant and Masteroffoxhounds to win the Seabiscuit Handicap in a three-way photo finish.
“The trip worked out right,” said Prat. “Coming for home, the way my horse was running, I thought I was a winner for sure. But then those two horses in front of me didn’t stop running.“I told Flavien to ride him with a lot of confidence,” said D’Amato. “He’s been breezing him the last couple of times on the turf and his last breeze was probably one of his best ever.Mike Smith moved Masteroffoxhounds into the lead from Smooth Like Strait shortly after the start and led deep into the stretch.
Although the field is short, it has plenty of name recognition with Defunded, Tizamagician, Newgrange, Parnelli and Azul Coast.Trained by Bob Baffert, the 4-year-old gelded son of Dialed In won the Grade I Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 10 and has four wins in 12 career starts. Edwin Maldonado will be aboard Defunded.
