A large house fire broke out in the Sandy area on Thursday, March 26, 2026, prompting a response from the Unified Fire Authority and the Sandy Fire Department. Investigators are finally expected to get a chance to go inside the massive house fire that broke out in Sandy on Thursday afternoon.
Unified Fire told 2News the fire did flare up several times overnight—and that fire crews were out all night making sure the fire was under control. "There's a lot of fuel load up there still. It's such a large structure that it's almost impossible for us to get through the entire theme and get it completely knocked out. So, we're just still monitoring it," said Kelly Bird, public information officer for the Unified Fire Department.Bird said roughly 20 people were on scene fighting the fire when it broke out, the heat of which neighbors recall blew out the windows of the house in a large boom. "What's going through your head when you're watching this?" 2News asked Michael Snow, a next-door neighbor who saw the fire from his porch. The last time Unified Fire saw a fire of similar size was about six years ago in Holladay, according to Bird. He explained that these fires can present a few challenges, such as untraditional access. "We are able to access it, but it is a longer, narrower drive to get up to where we had a better vantage point of fighting the fire, getting our aerial trucks in a spot where we could put the ladders up and get above the fire," He said. Bird added that with large houses with a lot of rooms, there are a lot of nooks and crannies. Fire crews are monitoring for more flare-ups before investigators can go in. "There's some pretty significant damage," Bird said. "It might be pretty difficult for them to pinpoint what caused it, but they're hoping to be able to find out."Bangerter Highway will be closed in West Jordan over the weekend. The highway will close from 9000 South to 7800 South starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday, March 28,An officer-involved shooting forced northbound I-15 to be closed at 4500 South. The shooting involved a Utah Highway Patrol trooper, who jumped out of his vehiclA St. George neighborhood experienced an infestation of hundreds of roof rats.
