Thousands of people remain in the dark Sunday morning following Tuesday’s severe weather.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - FirstEnergy said power should be restored earlier than its original August 14 date in a release Sunday afternoon. In the release, it shared that thanks to the over 7,500 storm responders, customers can expect power restoration much sooner, and a small number of customers in areas with more extensive damage may extend further into the week.

As of 10:30 a.m. Sunday, 36,804 FirstEnergy customers in Northeast Ohio are without power. For reference, as of approximately 4:15 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 273,354 customers were without power. Catlett continued, saying Tuesday’s storms were the “most impactful” storm to hit the area since July 1993, when a line of thunderstorms caused outages to 300,000 customers. Tuesday’s storms caused 471,000 outages at its peak.

Illinois-based ComEd announced Wednesday afternoon they would be sending crews into Northeast Ohio to assist FirstEnergy in the efforts to restore power. The Illuminating Company requested support from thousands of contractors to help with restoration and expects the majority of them to arrive in Northern Ohio today. Crews have restored power to nearly 200,000 customers impacted by Tuesday’s severe weather. Line workers continue to work around the clock to restore the remaining 267,700 customers.
