China has begun installation process of reactors at the Lufeng nuclear power plant in the eastern province of Guangdong.

The reactor pressure vessel was hoisted into place at the Lufeng nuclear power plant in China , marking the start of unit 6’s installation. Units 5 and 6 at Lufeng nuclear power plant will feature the home-built Hualong One nuclear reactor , one of the most deployed third-generation nuclear reactor designs in the world.

As demand for carbon-free energy grows, China is leading the world in generating electricity from renewable sources. While its massive solar and wind power plants will help generate energy from natural resources without carbon emissions, China recognizes that it needs a more reliable, on-demand energy source to power its vast industrial infrastructure and local demand. For this, the country is also investing heavily in nuclear power plants. Much like the renewable energy sector, China is also leading the world in the number of upcoming nuclear power plants. Not only is the Asian giant just building these massive projects, it is also developing homegrown technology to power them, like the Hualong One. Lufeng power plantThe Lufeng power plant in Guangdong province in eastern China is one of the many nuclear power plants being built with an eye on future demand. The plan was approved in 2014 with an initial capacity of four pressurized water reactors, which was later increased to six. After the National Nuclear Safety Administration approved the project in 2015, the government also added two more units, bringing the total number of reactors at the power plant to six. The first four reactors of the Lufeng power plant are of the CAP1000 type, the Chinese equivalent of the AP1000 built by Westinghouse Electric Company. Units 5 and 6, though, will use Hualong One reactors, jointly developed by the China General Nuclear Power Group and the China National Nuclear Corporation .Installing Hualong One reactorsWhile the plan to build units 1-4 received approval in 2014, the State Council approval for their construction did not come through till August 2024. So, construction on units 5 and 6 began in 2022 and is expected to be completed by 2028-29. According to China General Nuclear , on 21st February, the reactor pressure vessel for unit 6 began hoisting operations, officially commencing the installation of the unit’s main nuclear island equipment. The reactor pressure vessel is a high-strength steel cylinder that houses the reactor core and all associated components required to support and stabilize it. The reactor pressure vessel also provides a path for coolant to flow and helps guide the movement of the control rods. “Its installation quality directly affects the long-term safe and stable operation of the power plant,” the CGN said in a press release. “The successful hoisting of the pressure vessel lays a solid foundation for the subsequent installation of main equipment and the advancement of the project for Unit 6 of the Lufeng nuclear power plant.”Each of the Hualong One reactors has a gross capacity of 1,200 MW, while the four CAP1000 reactors can generate 1,160 MW. When operating at full capacity post completion, the Lufeng nuclear power plant will generate 52 TWh of energy every year, while preventing 42 million tonnes of carbon emissions that would have been generated by burning 16 million tonnes of coal, the CGN added.
