A first-grader was leaving an elementary school in Herriman to go to daycare when he was assaulted by another student with a small wooden baseball bat .
The incident happened on a private daycare bus leaving Silver Crest Elementary in Herriman, heading to ABC Great Beginnings daycare in Riverton. The child's father is asking why the student was allowed to have a bat on him in the first place.Man accused of assaulting victims with hatchet, pepper spray in Salt Lake "I mean, I was angry obviously, I mean, as any parent would be, you know, your child was just basically jumped by two kids," said Justin Robbins, the father of the child who was assaulted. "It's a scary, traumatic experience. It makes you very concerned going back to school." "He had asked them to stop, and when he turned around and verbally engaged with them, one of the students pulled a small wooden baseball bat. They were saying it was concealable inside of a backpack, like an 18-inch or 24-inch, like, small bat," Robbins said. He said they then hit him four times: twice in the head, once in the body, and once in the leg. Robbins told 2News his son was given a concussion test at the daycare and was later taken to an urgent care to be checked out, too. Robbins said his son did not have a concussion and is doing okay now. Johnny Anderson, president of ABC Great Beginnings, confirmed that the incident did happen. He said the altercation started verbally at Silver Crest Elementary and occurred on an ABC Great Beginnings bus. Anderson told 2News the aggressor received "appropriate" disciplinary action, and while not speaking directly to this case, told 2News their policy generally is that when violence is involved in an incident, the child involved is no longer allowed to attend the program."The daycare contacted their attorney to get an investigation going, they also expelled the kid from the daycare — the one who had the bat —and then they contacted, from what I understand, child protective services," Robbins said."I teach at a high school. We don't even let the tennis students walk around with their tennis rackets because that's just one more avenue of violence for any student who's feeling aggressive that day," Robbins said. "And the response was well, you know, anything can really be a weapon, a pencil, a crayon, but those are school supplies. There's no baseball team here from what I understand, no reason why students should have a baseball bat.""This did not happen on a Jordan School District school bus. It was after school and the student was on a private bus operated by ABC Great Beginnings and in the care and guardianship of ABC Great Beginnings childcare at that time. Baseball bats are only allowed at school for outdoor sporting activities." The school district also told 2News over the phone that if there was any student using a baseball bat in an aggressive way on campus, they would absolutely take action, and that the safety of kids is always a top priority. They said they did not know who the student with the bat was, or whether he did indeed attend Silver Crest Elementary School. "I think the school should update their policy to make a safer environment for the students and to put parent's minds like mine at ease," Robbins said. Two people were killed on Wednesday after a semi-truck collided with a Corvette near Erda in Tooele County. The crash was first reported just after 10 a.m. on MMajor roads surrounding the Temple Square in Salt Lake will close for several months after the Salt Lake City Council unanimously granted a request from the ChuA first-grader was leaving an elementary school in Herriman to go to daycare when he was assaulted by another student with a small wooden baseball bat. Now, hisClose to a dozen Utah cities impose "transportation utility fees," which are collected in addition to taxes.
