The decision to undergo brain surgery using the “awake craniotomy” procedure was meant to treat the patient and help her live a better life.

State Health Director Datuk Dr Rose Nani Mudin said the “awake craniotomy procedure” was performed safely on Jan. 12 at the QEH 2 Operating Room. The patient was a 50-year-old woman who had been experiencing headache symptoms since October 2022 and was diagnosed at HDOK Sandakan with multiple meningioma in the left hemisphere of the brain. The patient’s clinical condition and symptoms worsened to the point of impairing her quality of life.

Dr Rose, on behalf of the State Health Department, thanked the QEH 2 Department of Neurosurgery and Department of Anaesthesiology, HDOK Sandakan, Sungai Buloh Hospital, UMS Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, all experts and medical officers, as well as the support group who have committed to making this surgery a success. “Hopefully, this level of accomplishment and collaboration from multiple stakeholders will continue in the future,” she said.
