Today's Alaska weather forecast from Alaska's Weather Source.

ANCHORAGE , AK - After an extended stretch of dry and cold weather for much of the state, a strong Pacific low-pressure system will deliver areas of heavy snow, strong winds, and, for some areas, freezing rain starting Thursday night.

This will also bring much warmer and wetter conditions to Southeast. Thursday marks the transition day for many areas of Mainland Alaska that have been on the drier side, as a winter storm takes aim on the state. Ongoing winter weather will gradually transition to rain for the panhandle, with rising avalanche and possible minor flooding concerns into the weekend. The storm is still developing in the Pacific Ocean, and the precise track of the low will greatly dictate the amount of snow that will fall across western parts of Southcentral. As it stands now, most lower elevations of Southcentral should prepare for 3-6″ of snow. More is possible in the higher elevations and in areas where snow lingers longer. Areas closer to Prince William Sound, including Portage Valley, will likely see a transition to rain on Friday as warmer air moves in. High temperatures Friday and over the weekend will top out in the 20s and 30s, with overnight lows significantly warmer than previous mornings. We’ll want to watch areas of the Kenai Peninsula and southern parts of the Copper River Valley, as temperatures may be warm enough that a wintry mix and/or a light glaze of ice will be possible. Once the snow clears, the return to colder weather arrives. Highs next week drop into the 10s, with overnight lows back below zero.Waves of moisture continue to build into Southeast, with little in the way of dry time to be expected. Each wave brings some dry time, but then heavier precipitation returns. That trend will stay with us into the weekend and through early next week. A winter weather advisory has been issued from Glacier Bay to Juneau where an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow is possible before a transition to rain happens later today. Avalanche concerns will still be an issue, particularly as temperatures warm and we see a return to heavy rain for the panhandle. The heaviest rain arrives Friday, where many areas could see up to if not more than, an inch of rain. Rain falling on snow, with snow melt underway, is where a flooding concern will exist. Temperatures are set to climb well into the 40s for Friday, before we see a gradual return to colder weather over the weekend. This will lead many areas to see a transition back to a wintry mix Saturday, with snow showers back in the forecast for all locations by Sunday. Sunday into early next week, highs are set to fall back into the upper 20s and lower 30s.Much like Southcentral, today will be a transition day for the Interior. While it is still cold, cloud cover will quickly build into the region. This will lead to much warmer nights, although still below zero in many areas. The greatest warming comes during the day, as afternoon highs are set to climb near 10 degrees Friday and Saturday, with snow in the forecast. Many areas of the Interior remain under a winter weather advisory, where 4 to 7 inches of snow accumulation will be possible. Areas of the Eastern Alaska Range north of Trims Camp remain under a winter storm warning, where 9 to 15 inches of snow accumulation is possible. As the snow winds down early next week, the return to colder weather will arrive. Afternoon highs drop back into the subzero territory, while overnight lows drop back near -20/-30 degrees.Temperatures remain below normal along the North Slope, with snow chances increasing into the weekend. This comes as another system moves into the Slope from the Chukchi Sea. This will lead to more winds and snow accumulation for the Slope. Blizzard conditions will once again be possible for areas of the NE Arctic Coast near Kaktovik this weekend through the middle of next week. Expect many areas to remain well below average. An overall cold weather pattern remains with areas of Western Alaska, as temperatures continue to remain in the double-digit territory below zero. While things are fairly quiet today, outside of some gusty winds near Gambell/St. Lawrence, winds will return for many areas over the weekend. Strong northerly winds are expected to build in through the Bering Strait and along parts of the Seward Peninsula and St. Lawrence Island. Gusts up to 55 mph will be possible, with ground blizzard conditions. While snowfall will still be possible, it will be very light for western areas, with only 1 to 3 inches. Areas of Sotuhwest Alaska will see a different picture, as blizzard warnings and winter weather advisories remain in effect. The next storm building in from the Pacific Ocean is set to lead to whiteoutconditions and the potential for 5 to 10 inches of snow in these locations.Winter weather alerts are in effect for areas of the Eastern Aleutians and into the Alaska Peninsula, as our next storm system moves in from the south. Ongoing snow has been with areas of the Aleutians this week, with this upcoming storm set to reinforce the flow of cold northerly air and breezy winds. Up to 12 inches of snow accumulation will be possible, with winds up to 50 mph.Moderate avalanche danger at all elevations in Valdez. There is the possibility of triggering a deeper hard slab avalanche of 2 to 4 feet deep.Spring lovers may just have to take a backseat this month, as March will likely continue to keep the pattern of colder weather around. While storms have returned to the Gulf Coast region, looking through the middle of the month, drier weather will likely return to many areas outside of Southeast.24/7 Alaska Weather: Get access to live radar, satellite, weather cameras, current conditions, and the latest weather forecast here.
