Damage captured from Utah wind storm on Mar. 14, 2024 in Clearfield, Utah . A downslope wind event beginning Thursday is expected to create some hazardous driving conditions on I-15 and Highway 89 , but the potential problems aren't only limited to commuters.
Early-morning winds were blowing at around 3 miles per hour, and 2News Chief Meteorologist Lindsay Storrs warned Utahns not to let it lull them into a false sense security. A High Wind Watch was put into place just after 3 a.m. Thursday for the northern Wasatch Front, where winds were forecasted to reach sustained speeds of between 25 - 35 miles per hour with gusts up to 55 miles per hour.
The most heavily-impacted area will be in Davis County between Layton and Bountiful, according to the National Weather Service."Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines," according to NWS. "Widespread power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles."
The last downslope event happened in March, which toppled semi-trucks on highways and sent trampolines flying across neighborhoods.
