Extreme cold settles in Monday night with dangerous wind chills and multiple cold weather alerts in effect

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A dangerous arctic cold front is moving out of the region, bringing brutally cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills. Multiple cold weather alerts are in effect across Central and South Alabama, with the most dangerous conditions arriving Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Prepare now for the extreme cold that’s heading our way.The region will experience dangerously cold temperatures from Monday night through Wednesday, with the most severe cold Monday night into Tuesday morning. Wind chills will make it feel significantly colder than the actual air temperature, creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.Sunny skies with temperatures climbing to the upper 30s to low 40s. Winds from the northwest at 10-15 mph will keep it brisk. This is a good time to prepare for the cold night ahead.This is when the dangerous cold arrives. Lows will drop into the mid-teens to low 20s across the region. Wind chills will range from 15°F to 25°F below zero in some areas. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for most of central Alabama from 9 p.m. Monday through 9 a.m. Tuesday. South Alabama is under Freeze Warnings and Extreme Cold Warnings.Sunny skies continue with highs in the low to mid 40s. Wind chills early in the morning will still be dangerously cold , so bundle up for the morning commute. Winds will be lighter than Monday.Lows will be in the low to mid 20s across the region. This marks the beginning of a gradual warm-up.Afternoon highs will reach near 50 degrees to end the week. A front will move through and drop temperatures again by the weekend. Overnight lows will hover in the 20s. We look to remain mainly dry to end the week. With a few showers showing up in the forecast again next week.Limit outdoor time: Avoid prolonged exposure to the cold. If you must go outside, wear multiple layers, a hat, gloves, and a scarf to protect exposed skin. Check on vulnerable people: Elderly neighbors, friends, and family members may need help. Make sure they have heat and adequate supplies. Prepare for power outages: Keep flashlights, batteries, blankets, and a battery-powered radio on hand in case of outages.
