The Bureau of Meteorology is warning vast parts of the east of the country will experience above-average temperatures, raising fire risks from today.

Many parts of the country's east coast are expected to hit above-average temperatures from Wednesday.The Bureau of Meteorology is warning Australians of a "shock to the system" as the temperatures rise across parts of the country.

Forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology Jonathan How said temperatures this week had already been between 6 and 16 degrees Celsius above average for early November.ABC Goulburn Murray: Jason Katsaras" we'll see the focus of the heat through Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales," he said. He said the bureau expected the highest temperatures to head north- east towards the end of the week before hitting Queensland.Chief Officer of the Country Fire Authority in Victoria Jason Heffernan said high temperatures and the possibility of dry lightning could spell a difficult day for fire crews across the state.

"We are asking Victorian communities, particularly our farming communities in the Mallee, whilst we know they're undertaking harvest operations, just take that extra bit of caution today whilst we have these total fire ban conditions," he said. "Firefighters generally watch for what we call the fire spike days, which is that peak fire day, which generally is a total fire ban and extreme, or in the worst case scenario, catastrophic fire dangers," Mr Heffernan said.
