A stubborn blaze ripped through an eight-story residential building on Manhattan's Upper East Side, prompting a large-scale firefighting operation and displacing residents.

Firefighters faced a challenging blaze at an eight-story residential building on Manhattan 's Upper East Side on Monday afternoon. The fire erupted shortly before 12:30 p.m. at 160 E. 91st St. in Yorkville, with Citizen App videos capturing flames erupting through the roof. The fire relentlessly burned within the walls of the third floor, extending upwards into the cockloft, the space between the top ceiling and the roof.

Approximately 150 firefighters diligently worked to contain the flames, and one firefighter sustained a minor injury during the operation. 'This was a labor-intensive fire for the fire department,' stated FDNY Assistant Chief John Sarrocco. 'We stretched multiple handlines, eight to nine hose lines into the building, and we had to expose fire on every one of those floors by pulling the ceiling and opening the walls and extinguishing fire.'The intense fire forced some residents to evacuate with only a few possessions. The Buildings Department has issued a vacate order for at least a dozen apartments, leaving residents displaced. One resident, Adout, expressed their distress: 'It's horrible. Really terrible. Literally, I was at work, and I came here. Seeing this was scary.' Fire marshals are actively investigating the cause of the fire
