Fear of a devastating winter in the suburb where residents take two buses to buy an 80p loaf of bread

Today , the streets are quiet and those out and about seem to be enjoying the last of the summer heat. But as winter approaches, it brings a fresh wave of stress and worry to a community which has already been disproportionally hit by the pandemic.

Elizabeth said their community is still reeling from the effects of Covid, and this new price hike will cause residents to struggle even more. One of the main challenges facing the community is access. "If you don't drive," she said, "Ingol is a very isolated community." "We also have a higher community of people who worked jobs who were furloughed, and then for some, were subsequently made redundant. People were just starting to get back on their feet, and some are working two jobs just to pay the bills now, how are they going to cope?"

Liz said: "People in areas like this are maybe second and third generation and so on of low income. So the idea of being in debt is completely foreign to them, because they are masters of budgeting. I have been running budgeting sessions here at the centre and I have been schooled by this community, because they are so good at making their money last.

They also offer cooking lessons to make sure people can make the most of what the pantry has to offer. People who have over £16,000 in savings are no longer eligible for universal credit. This includes any one-off lump sums which may have been inherited. "They can't go into debt because they're not allowed. They might not be allowed overdrafts and things like that. There's just there's there's no buffer, there is no safety net."

But it's not just Ingol's residents that are struggling. With the dramatic increase in energy prices Liz and Denise are worried about what it will mean for the centre.
