The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns about the dangers of inhaling nitrous oxide, particularly the colorful, flavored products sold in gas stations and smoke shops.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a public warning regarding the escalating number of injuries linked to the misuse of nitrous oxide , particularly those sold in eye-catching containers with diverse flavors readily available at gas stations and smoke shops. Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas , is often associated with fleeting feelings of euphoria among users.
However, the FDA issued a warning on Friday stating that a growing number of individuals have been hospitalized after inhaling the drug, leading to dangerously low blood pressure and loss of consciousness. This warning comes as nitrous oxide has found a new market in gas stations and smoke shops under various brand names such as Cosmic Gas, Galaxy Gas, and MassGass. These brands often employ colorful and vibrant packaging and offer a variety of flavors to appeal to consumers. Despite warnings on the bottles stating that these products are intended solely for cooking purposes, the brands have gained popularity online, with teenagers and young adults sharing videos of themselves inhaling the substance. The euphoric sensation stems from a dangerous reaction; the gas restricts oxygen flow to the brain. This growing trend prompted the FDA to observe an 'increase in reports of adverse events' associated with these products. Poison control centers have also reported similar concerns. While there is no federal age restriction on nitrous oxide, several states have implemented mandatory minimum age laws for purchasing these products
