The death of Townsville father-of-three Jerromy Brookes from a snakebite has raised broader questions about the liability of businesses who call someone for assistance on their premises.

A Workplace Health and Safety investigation is underway into the death of a man bitten by a snake at a North Queensland childcare centre.A lawyer says businesses should review their plans for similar scenarios to avoid liability.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is investigating the incident at Green Leaves Early Learning in the Townsville suburb of Burdell. "If an employer does not fulfil their obligations, they may be in breach of the Work Health and Safety Act and could be prosecuted.Ms Splatt said even casual arrangements, where someone was volunteering to help or fulfilling a favour, could leave businesses liable.

The airline last month agreed to pay $21,000 to Theo Seremetidis, a trained health and safety representative, who directed others not to clean planes arriving from China early in the COVID-19 pandemic. Seremetidis was stood down by Qantas subsidiary Qantas Ground Services in February 2020 hours after he told others to cease cleaning and servicing planes over concerns staff could be at risk of contracting the virus. Judge David Russell handed down the $250,000 penalty to Qantas in the NSW District Court on Wednesday. It is the first instance of a major airline facing criminal prosecution for violations of workplace safety regulations. Seremetidis directed workers not to clean the planes under Section 85 of the Work Health and Safety Act, which sets out the right of workers to cease unsafe work.
