in droves, and one of the calendar's quirkiest of these events is the much-loved and much-maligned SantaCon.

What began in San Francisco in 1994 with just 25 Santas in a party bus has grown exponentially. DiBell estimates as many as 17,000 participated in SantaCon San Francisco in 2018, and you'll now find SantaCon events in more than 300 cities from Aarhus to Zürich in dozens of countries worldwide. SantaCon has no official route or set schedule. Organizers in the past have attempted to hash out walking routes and cue up participating businesses, but the task was daunting and never went to plan. So SantaCon now takes an agenda-free approach, with Santas roaming to their favorite restaurants and watering holes, exploring new neighborhoods, or wherever the sea of red velvet takes them.
