An Akron man who was diagnosed with mental illness dies after contracting pneumonia at the Summit County Jail. The man’s family members say Sheriff Kandy Fatheree gave them her personal promise that he would get the help he needed — but the county dropped the ball.

After learning about his arrest, Neal says he spoke directly with Sheriff Kandy Fatheree, who assured him Jay would receive the treatment he needed. The Summit County medical examiner’s report indicated Jay died from acute necrotizing Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia. “No one ever took the time to bother to look at their own records to see what was happening to this man.”

Meanwhile, Jay’s family is devastated knowing that this year one of them won’t be making it home the holidays.
