Our family gatherings are always very big, over 100 people. A few years ago at Thanksgiving, my sister brought a guy she had been dating for a few months. Nobody in the family had ever met him before, but we were all kind to him. We have a tradition where, at the beginning of dinner, we all say things we are thankful for — and when it was the boyfriend’s turn, he made a speech about my sister, and then shockingly, got on one knee and proposed.
My sister was surprised, but I didn’t even get to hear her answer to the proposal because half of the family started shouting about how it was a terrible idea because they just met and she should say no. My drunk uncle even threatened violence to the boyfriend. My sister’s boyfriend was clearly embarrassed and, without saying a word, he got in his truck, drove eight hours back to his hometown, and ghosted my sister. This was five years ago, and nobody in our family, even my sister, ever talked to him again. After my marriage imploded in November of 2008, my mother invited my estranged husband to Christmas dinner rather than inviting me. It was only after he declined the invitation that she invited me. You see, my ex-husband was quite a bit older than I am — closer to my mother's age than mine. She had the hots for him and thought she would shoot her shot with him over Christmas dinner. Last year at Christmas, my uncle was going off about how Metallica was way more successful than Taylor Swift. I took the liberty to breakdown their successes, and show him that he was well, WRONG. Boy, was that a mistake. His response was that all women are terrible and that women as an entirety are stealing opportunities for employment and equality from MEN. When no one in my family stood up to him, including his own daughter, I respectively got up and saw myself out from the gathering. It was Christmas Day and my family was sitting around the living room (me, my brother, my sister, my father, my uncle, and my grandmother)
