The family of a man who died in the custody of the Travis County Jail has filed a federal lawsuit alleging the jail staff failed to provide him with necessary b

lood thinner medication and testing, leading to his death.

According to the lawsuit, Victor Gonzales Jr. suffered from debilitating blood clots that caused him severe pain, shortness of breath and difficulty with everyday activities like walking and thinking. The suit claims that while Gonzales was in the custody of both the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Travis County Jail, he repeatedly informed staff of his need for blood thinner medication and weekly blood tests. However, the lawsuit alleges the staff denied him this medical care, resulting in his death from a blood clot in September 2022.

The lawsuit accuses Travis County, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and the University of Texas Medical Branch of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act by failing to accommodate Gonzales' disability. It also alleges individual jail staff members violated his Eighth Amendment rights through deliberate indifference to his serious medical needs.

Gonzales' family is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, as well as attorney's fees and other relief.
