Perinton, N.Y. (WHAM) — The Fairport Central School District is making big changes to its daily schedule.
As of fall 2026, school start and end times will shift to allow middle and high school students to sleep in longer.
Johanna Perrin and Martha Brown middle schools will run from 8:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m., and Fairport High School's hours will be 9 a.m.-3:45 p.m."We have clear, unequivocal evidence from neurosciences that it’s at night when you’re sleeping that your memory systems consolidate the information you took in during the day and what you learned," said John Foxe, director of UR Medicine's Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience.
"If you think about the average high schooler, getting up at 7 a.m. to make it to class, which seems like a reasonable rise time, that means your average high schooler needs to be in bed and asleep by 9 p.m., and I think any of us who have ever had a teenager, knows that’s ridiculous and preposterous," Foxe said."I think it’s great," O'Donnell said. "I’m actually all for it.
