FastCast digital headlines for the afternoon of Friday, Jan. 3, 2025.FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Users of the Fairbanks North Star Borough’s transfer sites are advised that each site will be closed next week to remove hard-packed snow.This marks the first of two hardpack removals happening this year, the second beginning in the spring.
“We live really spread out in a lot of rural areas so we don’t have the same kind of trash collection services that other municipalities or cities down in the lower 48 have. So, since we have so many people living off-grid, it’s really important that we can have these spaces open for us to, to bring our disposables and our trash,” said Kaitlin Wilson, Public Information Officer for the borough.
The removal of hard-packed snow is intended to make the road inside smoother. Each site is expected to be closed for four to five hours, according to Wilson. Jan. 7 will see the same pattern of closures, with Two Rivers and Farmers Loop West closing from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Farmers Loop East closing from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
