The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Board of Education voted in favor of outsourcing custodians to help remedy the budget deficit.
voted in favor of outsourcing custodial services in a 4-3 vote Tuesday night., with school district leadership stating that there would be millions of dollars saved by the proposal. According to the school district, much of that comes from the elimination of benefits and salaries paid to the custodians currently employed by the school district.
“I do know many of the custodians I have talked to said that even if the opportunity to continue doing the work under the contract company at their same site were to arrive, they feel the school district doesn’t value them enough to come back and do that,” she said. John Notestine, a spokesperson for the Mat-Su Borough School District , verified that his district had attempted this between 2006 and 2009. During that time, third party contract services eventually became more expensive than hiring custodians within the district. That resulted in a return to the MSBSD hiring their own custodians.
Prior to the vote, both voting and non-voting members of the board said they were against the proposal.
