The Jackson school board approved selling the former Sylvia Rosenauer Elementary School — which closed after 62 years — to Bais Yaakov of Jackson, according to the K-12 school district. The school board accepted a $13.1 million bid for the site at its Dec. 11 meeting. It was the higher of the two submitted bids, officials said.the Asbury Park Press reported.Jackson school district administrators cited the impact of $22.

4 million in state aid reductions during the past seven years when they announced the closure of the Sylvia Rosenauer Elementary School. Of the district’s six elementary schools, Sylvia Rosenauer had the lowest enrollment, with 265 students. State law requires school boards introduce a balanced budget by the end of June. A state monitor assigned to Jackson cited the budget rule in explaining her decision to overrule the school board after it voted, 6-0, against proceeding with the spending plan that included closing the school. The monitor was appointed last year as one of the conditions when the district requesting a state loan. In addition to closing the school and eliminating courtesy busing, a total of 70 jobs were cut, including an unspecified number of teachers and administrators. However, the district said the “vast majority” of the staffing reductions would be via attrition. The Sylvia Rosenauer school was known as the Brookwood School when it opened in 1962. It was renamed in 1978 to honor the school’s first principal.
