FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The World Ice Art Championships are set to begin Friday and workers and volunteers are busy preparing for opening day.

Hauling and preparing blocks of ice, plowing the sidewalks at the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds, and carving designs near the entrance for the community are some of the tasks being completed this week. The carving events themselves run from Feb. 14 to March 1 — weather permitting — and are divided into a few different categories.“We’ve got teams from Scotland, we’ve got teams from England, we’ve got teams from Japan ... they’re coming from everywhere,” Kohler said. ”We’ve got a carver in from Brazil."The event not only draws competitors from all over, but tourists as well.“We’re a huge economic driver with winter tourism,” he said.“And they aren’t all local,” he stated.
