The code had minimum requirements that didn’t match up with life in the present-day Fairbanks-area, according to Community Planning Director Kellen Spillman, and featured inflexible language that failed to equip borough planners with adequate latitude.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On Thursday, a retail store with 30,000 square feet of sales space in the Fairbanks North Star Borough’s general commercial zoning district would have needed to supply 150 parking spaces. That’s because the FNSB Assembly adopted a new set of parking standards Thursday night in a unanimous vote.
DiRutigliano, along with President of the Fairbanks Downtown Association David Van den Berg, voiced support for the updated parking regulations on Thursday during public testimony. They quietly celebrated in the back of the assembly chambers with a few others after the measure passed. O’Neall said the measure is in large part a consequence of the borough’s newly updated downtown plan, which passed earlier this year after seven years of work.
