The school district and three employee unions have reached an agreement on healthcare premiums at the cost of losing benefits.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A tentative healthcare agreement between the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District and its employee unions was reached on Sep. 19, easing concerns for many that would have been impacted by increased health insurance premiums.
While some educators have said their health insurance premiums were very low, the increasing prices left many to anticipate another increase of nearly $100 per pay period. The prices initially proposed were much larger than anticipated. The initial proposal would have decreased the most expensive plans by an estimated $100, but all of the other plans saw significant increases with the cheapest option for single adults increasing to $256.
Negotiations between the Fairbanks Educators Association , the Education Support Staff Association , the Fairbanks Principal Association and the school district were able to drastically reduce the premiums in the original plan. The reduction of the premiums were vital to avoiding what would have been a “catastrophic premium increase,” said Danette Peterson, the president of the FEA.
