Fairbanks was one of many cities across Alaska and the country that saw a ‘No Kings’ rally Saturday, but its protest featured something many others likely did not.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Fairbanks was one of many cities across Alaska and the country that saw a ‘ No Kings ’ rally Saturday, but its protest featured something many others likely did not.“Not only are they down here utilizing their First Amendment rights, being in community with each other, but also helping donate socks specifically to the Bread Line ,” Bread Line Executive Director Hannah Hill said.

Hill stressed that, while they might not immediately spring to mind when thinking of supplies that a food pantry would offer, socks are a critical garment for any Fairbanks resident, especially one without consistent shelter. “It’s cold and wet out here,” Hill said. “And that is very dangerous for feet. Oftentimes people don’t think of socks when it comes to homeless services, but it’s one of the most needed items at our soup kitchen or at any place that helps people who are unhoused.” While Hill said the event was not an official Bread Line operation, she said the group of volunteers had worked with them many times in the past. “When they’ve collected everything here today, they’ll package it all together and bring it to us the next time we’re open,” Hill said. The Bread Line’s office is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Hill said anyone in the community is welcome to bring in more socks during that time. ‘Every fiber of me wishes I could change it all’: Veteran musher posts tribute to dog who died during IditarodBethel officer-involved shooting leaves one injuredAnchorage doctor who ran in 2013 Boston Marathon marred by bombing returns to honor family lost to cancer
