FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Hungry Robot first caught the attention of “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” host Guy Fieri in 2021, wowing the foodie with their Dilly Dilly Pickle Pizza.10 years ago, however, The Hungry Robot was wood firing their pizzas on the road.
“We were making ice cream and freezing it and popsicles, and it was a ton of fun, but I kind of wanted to do more,” said Randy Bezdek, owner and founder of The Hungry Robot. “We wanted to do something that was kind of Italian, and pizza is kind of really the only thing we could think of that would be easy to do at a farmer’s market.” Bezdek told Alaska’s News Source that he and his wife decided to make pizzas with unconventional toppings, such as pickles, chicken, and waffles.“I was standing outside at the oven at 45 below cooking wood-fired pizzas, which is a lot harder than you think,” he said.Within two years, however, The Hungry Robot had its own brick-and-mortar restaurant. It was this location that caught the attention of the “Food Network” show.“We didn’t have dine-in and they said that if you don’t have dine-in, we aren’t going to come visit your store,” he said.Once the dining room was completed, the episode was ready to be filmed.“It was just kind of like hanging out with somebody. A lot of input, a lot of feedback.”“We probably actually went up 45 to 50% just within the first month or two,” he said. “We’re years out from when we aired, but you can tell when the rerun runs because you’ll get a rush of people.” Now with Fieri’s new endorsement, Bezdek said the restaurant is already preparing for an increase in attention. “This week is already busy enough that I’m already getting complaints about wait times, so we ended up just having to start hiring again tomorrow and just to try to build up for it.” Bezdek said that he hopes to continue serving his customers the iconic pizzas they have come to love.
