FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Unkempt buildings and cluttered properties have tapped City of Fairbanks’ resources in recent months. Elected officials are proposing city code changes to see what sticks, but one such idea didn’t adhere after a Monday night Fairbanks City Council meeting.Fairbanks Police Department
Sprinkle, who has sought to address blight before becoming a council member, said there’s another facet of the legislation’s intent. Sprinkle is one of three sponsors of a pair of problem property ordinances discussed at a June 18 Fairbanks City Council work session. Those hit the council’s regular meeting agenda Monday night, but only one has remained on track to make it through to a second reading.
The measure would call for the registration of vacant buildings within city limits, requiring the owners of empty properties to pay annually according to a fee schedule that starts at $100 and maxes out at $500 per year.
