A Hobart councillor who says removing a statue of a divisive colonial-era figure is akin to putting 'everything that colonisation brought on the chopping block' denies her statements are racist — as some call for her to be sacked.
Cr Elliot said she was frustrated with what she described as people taking "selective offence" to issues.
Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre campaign manager Nala Mansell said the councillor's statement was offensive. Ms Mansell acknowledged that people were entitled to different opinions but said the social media comments were discriminatory. "I just feel sad, I also feel really angry, now that I've read the comments — that's just absolutely terrible," he said.
