The funding for an AFL stadium in Hobart must not impact other areas of the budget, says shadow environment minister and senator for Tasmania Jonathan Duniam.
The AFL stadium, which is set to be built at Hobart's Macquarie Point by 2028, has faced pushback in recent months over the costings and resources needed to get the project underway.
"I've asked Labor federally, I know the state government have here too, whether they can quarantine that money from those calculations but to date there's been silence."Senator Jonathan Duniam says the federal government must guarantee that its $240 million funding towards the Hobart stadium is exempt from GST. "So the ball is squarely in Julie Collins' court, Jim Chalmers' court and the Prime minister's court to make sure funding is exempt from GST.Mr Duniam also said while he doesn't oppose the stadium as a stand-alone project, the government should fund the"must haves" before investing in the"nice to haves".
"Tasmanians see through you. They see a Premier whose lost touch with the issues that matter to spend his entire time in the job focusing on building a unnecessary billion-dollar stadium."
